Beginning with a flight to Coca and a scenic river journey into the reserve, you will venture deep into Kichwa territory, where traditional knowledge and a close connection to nature remain an integral part of daily life. Explore the tranquil waters of Lagartococha Lagoon and navigate remote blackwater rivers surrounded by primary rainforest, home to an incredible diversity of wildlife including monkeys, river dolphins, caimans, colorful birds, and giant otters.
Travel further into the heart of the Amazon to visit remote indigenous communities and gain insight into their traditions, sustainable way of life, and relationship with the rainforest. Discover the spectacular Zancudcocha Lagoon, one of the most pristine ecosystems in the region, offering exceptional opportunities for wildlife observation and photography.
Throughout the expedition, guided excursions by canoe and on foot provide intimate encounters with the Amazon’s extraordinary flora and fauna. The journey concludes with a return to Tierras Orientales and a transfer back to Quito, leaving you with unforgettable memories of one of South America’s last great wilderness areas.
Itinerary
Start of the Tour – Navigation along the Aguarico river
Your Amazon adventure begins with two travel options from Quito. You can choose to fly to Coca city, arriving around 10:15 AM, or you can take an overnight bus trip from Quito, arriving in the city of Lago Agrio around 7:30 AM – the meeting is the Meeting Point Restaurant, here you can have breakfast and rest until the guide arrives at 10:30 AM for your private transfer to Tierras Orientales.
At 12:30 PM, we set off from Tierras Orientales, taking an alternate route into the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve. Enjoy a delicious box lunch as we navigate the Aguarico River, characterized by its white waters and surrounded by local communities including the Secoya and the Shuar indigenous nationalities
After about 3 hours of navigation, we enter the Cuyabeno River, a black water river teeming with biodiversity, good chance to observe the pink river dolphins as we glide through the stunning scenery.
Upon reaching our first campsite, we’ll set up our camping equipment, immersing ourselves in the jungle atmosphere. Later, explore the tropical rainforest and ascend the Kichwa tower for breathtaking views of the forest canopy. Here, you can spot various bird species while enjoying the beautiful sunset.
As night falls, embark on a guided walk to discover the nocturnal life of the rainforest. Listen to the sounds of insects, frogs, and snakes, gaining insight into the vibrant ecosystem around you. After a hearty dinner, gather for a briefing with your guide, who will outline the exciting activities planned for the next day.
Kichwa Territory – downstream the Aguarico – Lagartococha
Awake to the sounds of the rainforest and join us for an early morning activity to search for monkeys and various bird species. This is the perfect time to appreciate the vibrant wildlife that thrives in the Amazon Basin.
After a delicious and healthy breakfast, we’ll enjoy a walk through the rainforest exploring this incredible ecosystem, we’ll learn how the myriad life forms coexist and thrive in a delicate balance besides we learn about the using of the medicinal plants. Return to the campsite. After we’ll continue our journey downstream to the confluence of the Cuyabeno and Aguarico rivers stop to observe the stunning union of the black water and white-water rivers. We’ll navigate for approximately 3 ½ hours towards the Peruvian border, making our way to the Lagartococha River. Enjoy a box lunch along the way, taking in the breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. Following the Lagartococha River upstream, we will reach our second campsite, nestled deep within the remote jungle. Here, you’ll access flooded areas formed by a network of lagoons and small rivers.
Take the opportunity to explore the interconnected lagoons and black water rivers, experiencing the diverse ecosystems of the flooded and Varzea areas of the tropical rainforest. This is a chance to witness the unique flora and fauna that thrive in these environments. Later we´ll swimming close to the pink dolphins. After dinner feedback with more information about the experiences of this days.
Remote Community visit – Night Excursion
Start your day with an early morning canoe ride, immersing yourself in the sounds and sights of nature awakening around you. This peaceful experience is a perfect way to appreciate the beauty of the Amazon good chance to observe some species of monkeys such as red howler monkey, saki monkey and others. Return to camp for a hearty breakfast, then we’ll navigate upstream along the Lagartococha River towards the Secoya community in Puerto Estrella, located on the border of Peru and Ecuador. Upon arrival, the Secoya people will warmly welcome us, sharing their rich customs and traditions passed down through generations. Engage with community members and learn about their way of life, including a fascinating demonstration by Secoya women on how to prepare traditional cassabe bread.
After our cultural exchange, we’ll return to campsite. As evening falls, prepare for an exciting canoe excursion in search of caimans. Glide silently through the waters, keeping your eyes peeled for these fascinating reptiles and other nocturnal wildlife.
Conclude your day with a delicious dinner at the camp, sharing stories and experiences with fellow travellers under the stars.

Pink River Dolphins & Zancudococha Lake Exploration
After breakfast, we will navigate downstream on the Aguarico River for about three hours, reaching the dark waters of the Cocaya River. Our journey takes us to the Martinica, where you’ll discover a project dedicated to the conservation of the pink dolphin. This unique lake has become a haven for these fascinating creatures, as the community members have built a relationship with them. This initiative has turned into a significant attraction for both visitors and locals. Box lunch. Later we navigate upstream through the lush rainforest reaching the Zancudococha lake where we have the third campsite. Night walk around observing the nocturnal life. Dinner
Zancudococha Lake Exploration
After breakfast, we’ll begin our journey back to the Aguarico River. Enjoy a scenic almost 2 hours canoe ride as we navigate through the lush rainforest.
Next, we’ll visit Zancudococha Lake, one of the largest lakes in the Ecuadorian rainforest. Here, you can explore the lake’s surroundings, spotting various bird species and fish that inhabit these waters.

In the afternoon, we’ll continue our journey upstream along the Aguarico River, navigating for approximately 3 hours until we reach our final campsite on the Cuyabeno River.
Upon arrival, you’ll have some free time to relax and unwind in this serene setting. Enjoy the sounds of the rainforest as you reflect on your incredible journey.
After a delicious dinner, you have the option to join a night walk, where you can explore the jungle under the stars and encounter the fascinating nocturnal life of the Amazon.

Return to Tierras Orientales and Quito
After an early breakfast, we’ll begin our final navigation upstream along the Aguarico River, enjoying the last breathtaking views of the Amazon Basin.
We expect to arrive at Tierras Orientales around 11:30 AM. This is your last chance to appreciate the stunning landscape before transitioning back to civilization.
Return to Quito.
If you’re returning to Quito by bus, we’ll connect you with the tourist bus for your journey back. For those flying, we’ll drop you off in Coca, where you’ll spend the night by yourself before catching your flight the next day at 10:00 AM.
