Ecuador seeks to end plastic pollution

November 2024

Ecuador joins 67 countries that support a treaty to end plastic pollution. A group of 67 countries approved a binding global treaty that seeks to end plastic pollution by 2040. Plastics are almost omnipresent in the world. They are everywhere, including in the seas where huge waves of plastic waste are created that kill the life of the oceans. With the aim of ending the use of this material by 2040, or at least trying to do so, some 67 countries including Ecuador signed a binding global treaty on this problem during a meeting of the UN Intergovernmental Negotiation Committee (INC), held in Busan (South Korea). The platform of countries, which calls itself The High Ambition Coalition to End Plastic Pollution (HAC), is made up of: European Union, United Kingdom, countries in the region such as Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Uruguay, and other nations such as Nigeria, Gabon, Japan, South Korea or Australia. In the treaty, these countries “reaffirm their common ambition to protect human health and the environment from the serious effects of plastic pollution” and call for “the development of a legally binding international instrument.” The 67 countries highlight their “strong united commitment” to “ambitiously and effectively” conclude the negotiations. Despite four previous rounds of negotiations, an agreement has not yet been reached with major oil-producing countries such as Saudi Arabia, Russia and China.
