In Ecuador, a new species of orchid has been discovered, named Telipogon pillaropatatensis, in honor of the cantons of Píllaro and Patate. This orchid, found in the highlands of the central-eastern part of the country, covers only a few square meters of the forest, which is why it is potentially in danger of extinction.

Telipogon is a genus of orchids that includes approximately 240 species that extend from Mexico, the Antilles, Central America; and the Andes, from Venezuela to Bolivia, being particularly diverse in Colombia, Ecuador and Peru.

Like most Telipogon species, T. pillaropatatensis shows sympodial growth with short, flattened stems, inflorescences, ancipites at the base and a pyramidal ovary. However, morphologically, it shows similarities with Telipogon octavioi, differing from it by having a corolla with thick longitudinal lines, without reticulations; and a column with three dense tufts of setae of equal size.
