Itinerary
Your Amazon adventure begins at first light in Lago Agrio (Nueva Loja), the gateway to Ecuador’s rainforest. We will meet at Meeting Point Restaurant (near Blue Planet Hotel) at 8:00 a.m., located at Desvío del Puente Río Aguarico, Nueva Loja. From there, you’ll travel comfortably by private transportation on a scenic drive of approximately two hours to Tierras Orientales, where you will receive a freshly prepared boxed lunch for the journey ahead.
This is where your 5-day / 4-night Cuyabeno Reserve tour truly starts. You will then embark on an unforgettable 3.5-hour canoe journey through the waterways of the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve, one of the most biodiverse corners of the Ecuadorian Amazon. Gliding along blackwater rivers and forest-lined channels, you’ll have your first opportunities for wildlife viewing—watch for monkeys moving through the canopy, vibrant Amazon birds overhead, and, with a bit of luck, the iconic pink river dolphins that sometimes surface in these calm waters. The route itself is a highlight: pristine rainforest landscapes, mirror-like reflections, and the unmistakable feeling of traveling deep into the Amazon.
Upon arrival at Waita Lodge, you’ll have time to settle into your accommodation, unpack, and unwind as the sounds of the jungle surround you. After a flavorful dinner, your naturalist guide will provide a clear and engaging briefing on the upcoming excursions, preparing you for the days ahead in the Amazon rainforest.
As night falls, the rainforest reveals a completely different world. Bring your flashlight and join your guide for a guided night walk, a thrilling introduction to the Amazon after dark. You may encounter fascinating insects, spiders, and other nocturnal creatures—sometimes even snakes—while learning how this ecosystem comes alive under the cover of night. It is the perfect first immersion into the extraordinary wildlife of Cuyabeno and a memorable start to your stay at Waita Lodge.
Day 2 begins before sunrise, at 6:00 a.m., when the Amazon is at its most active and the light is ideal for wildlife observation. You will head out in a quiet, hand-rowed canoe, allowing you to move silently through the waterways and fully absorb the stillness of the rainforest at dawn. As the sun rises over the lagoons and flooded forest, you’ll enjoy exceptional opportunities for birdwatching in Cuyabeno—listen for the first calls of the morning and watch the treetops for toucans, herons, kingfishers, and other Amazon species. The route takes you through smaller lakes and calm channels before returning to Waita Lodge for a well-earned breakfast.
After breakfast, you’ll have time to rest—perhaps in a hammock—before setting out on a three-hour guided rainforest walk. This deeper jungle hike offers a richer understanding of the Cuyabeno Reserve ecosystem, from towering trees and medicinal plants to hidden insects and animal tracks along the forest floor. Your naturalist guide will interpret the rainforest in an engaging, story-driven way, sharing knowledge rooted in local traditions and generations of life in the Amazon. After the hike, you will return to the lodge for lunch and a short break.
In the afternoon, at approximately 4:30 p.m., you will head out again by rowing canoe for a contrasting experience across different habitats. First, you’ll glide into areas of blackwater flooded forest, where the mirror-dark surface reflects the canopy and wildlife often appears at close range. From there, the journey continues into narrower whitewater river sections, a change in environment that can attract different birdlife and species not commonly seen along the broader waterways—an excellent opportunity for travelers who want more diversity in their Amazon sightings.
As evening settles in, you will make your way back toward Waita Lodge, keeping watch as the rainforest transitions into night. During this return, you’ll venture downstream in search of nocturnal wildlife: caimans along the banks, fishing bats skimming the water, tree boas resting in overhanging branches, and night-active birds calling from the shadows. It is a captivating close to your second day in the Ecuador Amazon, and another reason Cuyabeno is considered one of the finest destinations for Amazon wildlife tours.
We start early at 5:30 a.m., when the rainforest is still wrapped in darkness and wildlife is most active. You will set out by motorized canoe and travel down the Cuyabeno River for approximately 1.5 hours, scanning the riverbanks and treetops for movement as the first sounds of the Amazon awaken. This is prime time for birdwatching in Cuyabeno, with frequent chances to observe species flying low over the water or calling from the canopy.
Around 7:00 a.m., you will arrive at a remarkable natural highlight: clay banks where parakeets and brilliantly colored parrots gather for their morning ritual. Watching these flocks descend to feed is one of the most memorable wildlife spectacles in the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve—a vivid, fast-paced scene of sound and color that few visitors expect, and an experience that feels genuinely exclusive in the remote Ecuadorian Amazon.
After returning for breakfast and time to relax, the day continues with another motor-canoe excursion to La Bocana, the scenic point where two rivers meet. This confluence is known for its expansive views and excellent conditions for spotting pink river dolphins, which sometimes surface in the calmer waters. Your guide will interpret the landscape and explain how these waterways shape the reserve’s biodiversity, before you return to enjoy a well-prepared lunch.
In the afternoon, at approximately 4:00 p.m., a new adventure begins as you travel by canoe to the Bird Observation Tower—one of the most impressive viewpoints in the region. Built around one of the area’s largest trees, the tower rises to about 28 meters above the forest floor, offering a rare, elevated perspective over the Amazon canopy. From this height, you can appreciate the rainforest’s scale and complexity, with excellent opportunities to spot canopy birds and, at times, wildlife moving through the treetops.
Before returning to Waita Lodge, you will take a short night walk near the tower, focusing on the smaller details that make the Amazon so extraordinary—new species of insects, nocturnal amphibians, and the subtle life that emerges after sunset. You’ll then head back to the lodge for dinner, keeping a careful eye on the riverbanks along the way, where caimans are often seen resting near the water’s edge.
On your final morning, you will enjoy one last early excursion—either a short walk into the rainforest or a gentle canoe outing—timed to coincide with the awakening of the Amazon. The first hours of daylight are consistently the most rewarding for wildlife observation, making this a fitting farewell to the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve. With the forest coming alive around you, it is an excellent moment for birdwatching and for taking in the atmosphere of the rainforest one last time.
After breakfast, you will return to Waita Lodge to pack and prepare for departure. Then the journey out of the reserve begins: a scenic approximately 3.5-hour canoe ride back to Tierras Orientales, offering a final perspective on the waterways and landscapes that define this extraordinary region of the Ecuadorian Amazon.
Upon arrival, your private transportation will be waiting for the return drive to Lago Agrio (Nueva Loja), with an estimated arrival time of around 4:00 p.m. From Lago Agrio, you may continue onward by bus or domestic flight toward Quito, depending on your travel plan.
