Cuyabeno Jungle Trips
Reception in Lago Agrio at 9:30 am for passengers arriving by bus and 11:00 am for passengers arriving by air, from where we take private transportation to the entrance of Cuyabeno, where we will have a box lunch. At this point, visitors will register at the booking office. Here, our naturalist guide will give you information about the reservation, important recommendations, and other tips before sailing for two hours on the Cuyabeno River to Jamu Lodge. During the canoe ride you will get a first glimpse of the jungle and you will see different types of birds such as the caciques, oropendolas, and the prehistoric hoatzin. You may also be able to see a variety of monkeys and other jungle animals, depending on weather conditions. We will arrive at Jamu Lodge around 4:30 pm. At that time, you will be shown to your rooms where you can relax a bit. After a nap, we will leave the lodge to swim in the lagoon and see a beautiful sunset in the middle of the large lagoon. Then you will return to the camp for dinner, and you can finish your first day in the jungle by relaxing in a hammock or having a drink at the bar.
After eating breakfast, you will take a 3 or 4 hour walk in the primary forest, where the guide will explain about a tropical forest and medicinal plants. You can also see big trees like the ceibo or small insects like ants. You will return to the camp for lunch and take a break and in the afternoon, we will go to see the beautiful butterflies and swim in the lagoon. If possible, we will be able to observe the beautiful grazed dolphins and enjoy the impressive sunset. Then we will return to the camp for dinner. At night, we will search for alligators along the banks of the river.
After breakfast, we begin an hour-long journey in a canoe downstream to visit a family of the Tarapuy community where we will learn how to prepare cassava, a traditional yucca bread.
We will spend all day learning to use the materials of the jungle to make bread before returning to the lodge at about 2 pm. After lunch we have relaxing activities and to end the day, we will take a short walk through the primary forest where we will listen to the sounds of the night and observe nocturnal creatures like spiders, geckos, and scorpions.
We will visit the surrounding area using a native canoe called “keel” for birdwatching and take another hike in the forest. While paddling, you have the opportunity to see more fauna and flora and you can get a good idea of what a flooded forest looks like. You can see a wide variety of different birds and monkeys. Because this activity is approximately 4 – 5 hours long, we will take a box lunch on the tour with us.
Early in the morning before breakfast, there is an optional birdwatching excursion. Returning to the lodge we have breakfast before checking out from the lodge at 9:30 am. You will then transfer from the lodge to Lago Agrio to catch the bus or return flight.
The tour typically ends in the city of Lago Agrio at approximately 15 PM.
